[ Birding 101 ]

BIRDWATCHING CODE OF ETHICS

Oh yes, Birdwatching has its own too! :D When you plan to go birdwatching, there are some reminders you have to bear in mind. These are key notes for you not to distract the birds in their natural habitat since we are here just to visit them and enjoy their beauty.

I have included a Birding Gear (taken from the WBCP website) as a guide to the necessary equipment and materials and your behavior once you go birding.

  • Binoculars and/or Spotting Scope - always bring a pair of binoculars used to spot your lifers! and if you want the exact details of the bird, use a spotting scope instead. :D
  • Backpack/Small Bag - pack all your things (birding guides, notebook, food and water, sunblock, insect repellant etc.) in a small backpack
  • Field Guides - these include your Birding guide (Kennedy, Fisher, etc.), Notebooks for your Lifelist and drawing birds you cannot identify (it really helps!) and pens!
  • Hat - if you're prone to sunburn or you easily blinded by the direct rays from the sun, then you have to wear this apparel!
  • Trail Food - birdwatching is not purely watching birds, it involves trekking and intense walking! so, to replenish all the calories you burned and the water you perspired, bring trail food and water along the way. just be reminded not to throw away your trash irresponsibly!
  • Proper Attire - you don't want to scare away the birds, do you? then you must not wear eye-distracting colored shirts! always wear the neutral ones like gray, khaki, brown, light green. in simple terms, blend with nature. :D
 Some important reminders:
  • Be ready to walk kilometers of trail, be it muddy, sandy or swampy!
  • The best time to see birds is from 5am-7am or 4pm-6pmthe perfect moments for birds to catch worms and enjoy the sun set :D
  • Be quiet! - birds are sensitive to noise more than you are. so make no unnecessary movements. :D
  • Observe them from a good distance. - don't you dare get closer or it will fly away. that's why you're provided with your binoculars.
  • Never ever try to touch them, steal their eggs nor disturb their nests! - this is self-explanatory, isn't it? ;)
